Why this one

  • The real UK fees, not US onesVinted, Depop, eBay private and eBay business each have their own rules, and every fee sits on its own line for every item.
  • Unsold stock is countedSee what is sitting in your spare room at cost, and item costs land in the month the item sold, the way HMRC treats stock.
  • Trading or clearing outBuying to resell is trading from the first item, selling your own wardrobe is not. The sheet keeps the two apart by source.
  • Per-platform reportingEach platform reports you to HMRC on its own at 30 sales or about £1,700 in a calendar year. The sheet counts each one for you.
  • Salary awareType your salary once and the tax estimate uses your real rate, so the money you set aside is the right amount.

How it works

  • Type your salary, or 0 if reselling is your whole incomeOne cell on Settings. eBay business sellers also type their category rate
  • Log each item when you buy it, then the sold price when it sellsFees, payout, profit, return on cost and days to sell fill in on every row. Room for 2,000 items
  • Read the tabs that do the restDashboard for the month or the year and your unsold stock, Tax check for reporting and what to put aside

Who it is for

Anyone in the UK reselling on Vinted, eBay or Depop, buying from charity shops, car boots, wholesale, job lots or marketplace flips, as a side hustle next to a job or as your main income. If you sell in your own name rather than through a limited company, HMRC treats you as a sole trader, so the tax side is built for you. It works for your own clear-out too, and keeps it separate. Most small resellers are not VAT registered. If you are, there is one switch for it on Settings.

Questions

Do I need Microsoft Excel?

No. It comes with a Google Sheets version, which is free with a Google account. The Excel file also opens in the free web version of Excel.

How do I get it?

Straight after payment it is in your library on this site: the Excel file, the PDF guide and the Open me first page with the Google Sheets button.

I only sell my own old clothes. Do I pay tax?

Selling your own used things is not trading, whatever the volume. The sheet keeps your own clear-out apart from stock you bought to resell, and the Tax check tab tells you where you stand.

I live in Scotland. Does it work?

Fees, payouts and profit work anywhere in the UK. The tax estimate uses the bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Scotland's income tax bands are different.

What if a platform changes a fee?

Every fee and rate sits on the Settings tab. Change one cell and every tab follows, so the sheet keeps up when a platform or HMRC change a number.
