Graduate jobs are down 45%. The career ladder is breaking from the bottom

career reality and leverage Jul 18, 2026

For seventy years the deal was simple. Get the degree, join the graduate scheme, climb. Each rung led to the next, and the first rung was always there for anyone who qualified. In 2026, that first rung is disappearing, and the reason matters for everyone above it, not just the graduates locked out.

This is not a story about young people struggling to find work. It is an early warning about how white-collar careers are being restructured, and what employed professionals should do about it now, while they still have options.

The central point

The career ladder is breaking from the bottom, and the same economics that removed the first rung will work their way up.

Being past entry level does not make you safe. It makes you early. The professionals who diversify their income now will be the ones with options when the squeeze reaches their rung.

The numbers

One data point is noise. Several pointing the same way is a trend. These come from across the UK labour market in early 2026.

The UK labour market in early 2026

<700k
UK vacancies in January 2026, the lowest since the pandemic
45%
Reported year-on-year fall in graduate roles
~1/3
Fall in job postings since the 2022 peak, on McKinsey's measure
140
Average applications now chasing each graduate vacancy

The exact figures vary by source and method: some analyses put the fall in advertised graduate jobs closer to a third, others lower. What does not vary is the direction. Fewer roles, more applicants, and posted wage growth cooling to a multi-year low across the board.

Why entry-level roles are going first

The mechanism is specific, and it explains why juniors are hit before anyone else. Artificial intelligence does not replace experience. It replaces the tasks that used to build experience: drafting, summarising, first-pass research, basic analysis, junior coding. These were the training grounds of every white-collar career, and they are exactly what large language models now do cheaply.

"AI does not replace experience. It replaces the tasks that used to build experience. Remove the training ground, and you do not just lose today's juniors, you lose tomorrow's seniors."

Employers are responding rationally. If one experienced person with AI tools can do the work of three graduates, the three graduates do not get hired. The result is a squeeze at the bottom, and it does not stay at the bottom. Fewer juniors today means fewer mid-level professionals in five years, and more competition for every role above.

What this means if you are already employed

You are not safe because you are past entry level. You are early. The same economics that removed the first rung will work up the ladder, and the rational response is not panic. It is diversification.

The comfortable assumption The reality worth acting on
My job is stable One employer is one income stream, which is concentration risk, not stability
My salary reflects my worth Your skills are worth more than your salary. The market for skills is bigger than the market for jobs
I will build something if I need to Building while employed costs you evenings. Building after redundancy costs you savings

See the career shifts early, and act before they reach you

The Parallel Operator position

Do not quit. Do not stay still either. Build the second income while the first one funds it. This is the whole point of the framework: build first, leave second, choose third, in that order and for a reason.

The graduates locked out of the ladder are being forced to build from zero, with no salary underneath them. You are not. You get to build from the security of a paycheck, on your own timeline, without the pressure of needing it to work by next month. That is a genuine advantage, and it is the kind that quietly expires. The best time to use it is while you still have it.
