The most expensive month is the first one
A year of your replies and direct messages have taught me this. The hardest part of starting is not effort. It is confusion. Four options, all shouting at the same time: e-commerce, digital products, freelancing, content. Everyone says their way is the best way. Usually because they sell a course about it.
So people do the sensible thing. They research. Six months later, they are still researching. Many open tabs, nothing started. I lost months like this myself, before August 2024. Confusion does not cost you the wrong choice. It costs you no choice.
The four paths, honestly
E-commerce. Selling physical products. This is my path. You need some money to start, and patience. But you do not need followers, because marketplaces bring buyers to you. Slow to start, strong to own.
Digital products. Templates, guides, tools. Build once, sell many times. Very little money needed, and no stock. But you need a skill people already pay for, and patience to build before you earn.
Freelance. Selling a skill you already use at work. The fastest way to your first pound, and it needs almost no money. But every sale costs your hours, so it grows slowly.
Content. Build an audience, then earn from its trust. The cheapest to start and the slowest to pay. Good if you truly enjoy posting. Painful if you do not.
Notice something. None of these is the best one. Each has made people free, and each has wasted years of someone's life. The difference is never the path. It is the fit.
Three things decide your fit
You already know your own answers.
Time. How many real hours a week, after work and family? Five hours points one way. Fifteen points another.
Money. How much could you spend without touching rent or savings? E-commerce needs some. Freelancing needs almost none.
Skills. What do people already pay you for? And what could you honestly learn in the free corners of a week?
Little money but strong skills: start with freelancing. Some money and patience: e-commerce. A skill you can turn into a product: digital products. Love writing and can wait: content. That is the whole secret. Nobody teaches it, because "it depends on your situation" makes a bad YouTube title.
Where people go wrong
Three mistakes waste the most years. Choosing a path because of someone's income screenshot. That is their result, from their life, not yours. Changing paths at the first difficulty, which restarts the clock every time. And copying a person instead of a fit. Your favourite creator's path worked because of their situation, not their willpower.
