How this calculator works
There are two right answers to "how many days", so this page gives both. From 1 January to 2 January is one day if you mean how far apart they are, and two days if you are counting both dates, the way you would count nights in a hotel against days of a holiday. The big number is the gap. The line underneath counts both ends. Neither is more correct; they answer different questions, so pick the one that matches yours.
Working days are the days from Monday to Friday in the range, minus any bank holiday that falls on one of them. A bank holiday that lands on a Saturday is not deducted twice, because it was never a working day to begin with. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, GOV.UK lists the substitute weekday instead, and that substitute is what gets deducted.
The nation matters more than people expect. England and Wales had eight bank holidays in 2026; Scotland and Northern Ireland had ten each. Scotland also had a one-off World Cup bank holiday on 15 June 2026 that England and Wales did not. That is why this page reads the live list from GOV.UK each day rather than relying on a fixed table, and why the nation selector changes the answer.
Dates are compared as UTC midnights rather than local times. It sounds like a detail, but the clocks change twice a year, and a range that crosses one of those Sundays contains a day of 23 or 25 hours. Subtracting local times across it gives a fractional number of days and can round to the wrong answer.
What it does not cover: your employer's actual working pattern, part-time or shift work, local holidays, company shutdowns, or religious observances that are not bank holidays. The GOV.UK feed covers 2019 to 2028, so working-day counts outside that window are not offered rather than guessed.
Questions people ask about counting days
How many days are there between two dates?
It depends whether you count both ends. From 1 to 2 January is one day apart, or two days if you count both dates. This page shows both figures side by side so you can take the one that fits. Hotel nights use the gap; a holiday allowance usually counts both.
How many working days are there between two dates in the UK?
Count the Mondays to Fridays in the range, then take off any bank holiday that falls on one of them. Pick your nation above, because Scotland and Northern Ireland get more bank holidays than England and Wales.
Do bank holidays count as working days?
Not in this calculator, and not for most employers. A bank holiday falling on a weekday is removed from the working-day count. One falling on a weekend is not removed twice, because GOV.UK already lists the substitute weekday that replaces it.
